Watch A Duramax Diesel Blow Up While Making 1,844hp On A Chassis Dyno – Big Smoke, Big Power, Big BOOM!

Watch A Duramax Diesel Blow Up While Making 1,844hp On A Chassis Dyno – Big Smoke, Big Power, Big BOOM!

Back in September, I announced a diesel truck event at Tulsa Raceway Park and one of the stars of the show was a truck called Overkill owned and driven by Dmitri Millard. This is a wild machine that capable of running into the 9s on the drag strip, making absolutely massive horsepower and torque on the dyno, and in theory should be awesome at sled pulling. Why do I say “in theory”? Basically because at that event the hitch ripped off the back of the truck after it had moved the sled a grand total of four feet. Yes, four. Despite that let down, I was super impressed with the truck over the course of the event. It has to be one of the most ragged edge, wild diesel pickups in the country today.

Recently Dmitri had the truck at a dyno event and in this video you’ll see the big pickup strapped to the rollers with its nose removed. You will see Millard working on getting the turbos to spool before he goes and makes a full power pull. One of the challenges in dyno testing a truck like this is actually getting the motor loaded down enough to spool the turbos and max maximum power during the RPM range in which the dyno pull is to take place. Seeing as this is a portable dyno, that becomes even tougher because they typically don’t have the capability to load the trucks like big permanent units do.

Anyway, after a couple of tries, Millard was happy with what he was seeing and let the truck have it. At the very top of the truck’s RPM range, it appears to kick a rod…or all the rods. There is a torrent of oil and other fluids raining down from beneath the truck and if you look close, there may be a wrist pin or something laying on the dyno itself just under the front bumper. Amazingly, the dyno read that the truck was making 1,844hp when the engine quit. Now, we realize that the number may be optimistic because of the type of dyno that it is, but even if it is off by 300hp or so….holy smokes!

Diesels are making insane power these days and it looks like the race to 2,000hp out of a Duramax is truly on. Will someone do it? How many more of these babies will die in the process? There’s nothing like max-effort, envelope pushing automotive innovation to both impress and horrify at the same time!

notice how nobody seems to give a rats butt until it blows up? People are strange. 🙂 How do these guys pay for this? It’s a huge investment in time and money, and there seem to be a lot of guys doing it. Not many “backyard” guys can make that kind of power.

You do know black smoke is Unburned fuel and if diesels are cleaner why wouldnt every economy car have one in it

The nature of STOCK, OEM diesels burn cleaner and are more economical. The problem with OEM diesels is the nitrogen that they pollute is very high, hence why they need an EGR and a DEF/afterburn system. Diesels built for power like this are in no way clean or economical. Black smoke = power

Mp, you do realize that pretty much every car sold in Europe has a diesel engine option. Its just that it hasnt caught on in North America because most people on this side of the pond are too stupid. They think that diesels are too noisy and smokey. when the reality is becuase of the emissions systems on them they dont smoke. As for the noise the big truck motors are quite quiet and the small diesels like the VW/Audi TDI you cant tell the difference

Nice job to the super genius standing next to the truck, you know in front of the tire spinning 100+ mph and the engine blowing up…

was just thinking that, what if it had blown up in a big way or the turbo let go? i’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be standing there after that…
