Sunday Re-Run: Old Guy Shuts Down a Runaway Diesel Engine While Youthful Helpers Run for the Hills!

Sunday Re-Run: Old Guy Shuts Down a Runaway Diesel Engine While Youthful Helpers Run for the Hills!

(Diving back into the archives we found this gem again and had to roll it back out for you to enjoy.) – Ever see those t-shirts with the slogan, “Old guys rule” on them? We never really got that whole deal until we watched this video. You need to fast forward about two minutes in to see the true magic start. What you’ll see is three guys working to get an old 1950 GMC truck started. More specifically, they are trying to get the old 4-71 Detroit Diesel engine in the truck running. It is being uncooperative, knocking and farting on the ether than a young helper is spraying down the air inlet. All of a sudden the engine lights off and happiness turns to panic when the fuel rack on the old Detroit hangs WFO and the engine runs away at full throttle.

Once the motor goes to the moon (for a diesel), the kid that was spraying the ether makes a half assed attempt to choke the thing out with a rag before hauling ass off camera like his hair is on fire. Five or ten seconds later, our hero appears. As it turns out, the dude trying to start the truck is an older gent and he ambles over calmly and lays a big board on top of the air inlet pipe partially choking the engine. You can see the exhaust go black with soot when the engine is close to choking out. Finally, he gets a rag from one of the kids and finishes the suffocation of the engine with it. They then share a good laugh. The expression on the kid’s face when he beats feet is absolutely priceless.

sure sounds good wound tight! I have found that the back of a clip board works well to shut em down.

that is just freakin’ hilarious!!!!!!!!… i like how the kid claims his rag got sucked into the intake, when in actuality he just threw it down on the ground and ran for the hills… haha… every shop needs at least one old guy to keep the young guys from killing themselves… like my dad always used to say (about me usually), shaking his head in disbelief, “youth!”… lol

453′s have an emergency kill that shuts off the air to the blower as part of the engine. I am surprised the 471 doesn’t have one…

Ha, good one. Back in the 70′s I drove a GMC with a 6-71 and a busted governor. The valves floated around 2800-2850 RPM and thats where I shifted her.

Feets don’t fail me now…The young guys in my shop seldom listen to me. I find a smack to the back of the head changes their attitude.

I can’t tell if I learned more from listening to them or the embarrassment from what happened when I didn’t listen to them. Now? They’re the first dudes I call.

With all of the ether they were shooting, it’s a wonder it didn’t just blow up

That was great – notice how the kids bolted and the elder guy was just as calm as can be. What a difference a generation makes.
