Jon Wall is one of our good friends here at BangShift and we’ve shown you great video before of him racing funny cars. He’s been doused in boiling transmission fluid and put through the wringer more than once behind the wheel of a flopper. Last weekend he was running his awesome Fireball Monza at Lebanon Valley Dragway’s Night of Fire event. The blown, alcohol burning car is a serious piece and it is a looker to boot.
On the run you are about to see, a heim joint that helps to anchor the wheelie bar broke, allowing the bar to simply lever up when the car was trying to climb the ring gear. You’ll see Jon come off the starting line, feel the front end start to come up, pedal, and then get back into the throttle. The second time he gets into the gas, the car climbs sky high and then lands HARD. The scary thing about this in a funny car is that when the body starts catching all of that air, there’s literally no telling if it will blow all the way over, veer sideways, or otherwise lost its mind.
In this case, the car comes down like a ton of bricks. Jon reports that besides his sore rump, the front axle is badly bent. He has not gone deep enough into the car to see if the frame is bent yet, but with no suspension to soften the landing, it may be. We sure hope not though. Jon was joking with us when he said, “I need to stop making the BangShift highlight reel with stuff like this!”
