Yesterday we ran video featuring a King of the Hammers competitor completely mangling his buggy by barrel rolling it across the finish line of the race. The poor bastards in the video below didn’t make it near that far.

To sum the event up quickly, it is a baja-style desert race with a mountain in the middle you need to rock crawl over. It is one of the most violent and dangerous races in the world and according to a couple guys we talked to, there were a bunch injuries sustained this year during the event outside of the normal punishment racers endure. The co-driver in this rig supposedly sustained two broken ankles when the buggy smashed face first into this huge rock.

Since this is a point to point style race through the desert, the “track” is not defined like it is on a road course or drag strip. If you find a line you like that is outside of the line other guys are taking, you are more than welcome to go for it. Unfortunately, ending up like this buggy is a risk. These guys decided to get outside the dust cloud to try and pass some other racers. The results were painful and abrupt.
