Freiburger's Jeep
Freiburger's Jeep is mostly an '81 Scrambler, but there's not much left that's factory. Stage one of the buildup was seen in some mid-'90s issues of 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine. The stories covered the installation of a GM Performance Parts HO 350 crate engine along with a Dodge/GM hybrid NV4500 five-speed trans, and the suspension back then used Currie 9-inch axles on top of a 4-inch lift. Mountain Off Road and Stage West 4x4, both in Colorado, handled fab work such as the rollcage and the frame bracing. The magazine also showed... Read More >

RUMBLE BEE '70 DODGE SUPER BEE
Freiburger has said that if our shop catches on fire this is the car to push out first. That's because it's his first and nicest car. It was purchased in April 1983, for $1,800 and was a daily driver through high school and beyond until it finally became a Hot Rod magazine project car in 1994 and 1995 (the stories are still live at www.hotrod.com). That was when it was painted for the third time and loaded with its fourth engine using the first of the... Read More >

The F-BOMB '73 CHEVY CAMARO
The F-Bomb may be our most famous project car, as it was seen in a multipart buildup in Hot Rod magazine in 2007, which also road-tested the Bomb in the June 2008 issue. You may have also seen the Bomb on other Web sites, and in 2009 it's scheduled to be featured in the newest Fast & Furious movie. Built by Nelson Supercars, the F-Bomb features a 1,550hp, twin-turbo 406 Brodix small-block (that also makes 700 hp on 91 octane), a TCI Pro-X Powerglide, and... Read More >

THE WORLD'S FASTEST SECOND-GEN CAMARO '80 Chevy Camaro
The So-Al Spl.is the world's fastest Second-Gen Camaro. That "world's fastest" claim is no tall tale: We've been clocked at 261.602 mph using a GM Performance Parts ZZ572/720R crate engine with a 150hp NOS nitrous shot. With the team of Keith and Tonya Turk and David Freiburger, the Spl. currently holds nine land-speed records at... Read More >

CHEVY C10 MUSCLETRUCK '74 CHEVY C10
It's virtually impossible to take a single vehicle and make it competitive in a number of different motorsports. Since we wanted to tackle that challenge anyway, we decided to make it one step tougher: We'd use a truck. Our plans for this stupidly anti-aero stepside include land-speed racing, drag racing (on the asphalt and on the sand), open-road racing, and even some open-track handling events. If we succeed, then we may even reconfigure it for some... Read More >

THE CRUSHER '67 CHEVY CAMARO
Here's the most historic car in our fleet; it's been seen in many issues of Hot Rod magazine. In 1993, Freiburger bought this Camaro for $700 from the second owner, who was waiting in line to have it crushed by Chevron, which would have earned smog credits from the state of California for destroying the car. Hot Rod proved that the Camaro's inline six was not a gross polluter, then staffer (now editor) Rob Kinnan organized a complete smog-friendly buildup. The Crusher was later revamped with an aluminum 632ci big-block before... Read More >

THE CRUISE '67 CHEVY IMPALA CONVERTIBLE
We didn't really intend to own this despite the fact that we'd always craved an excessive American drop-top. Perhaps it was that long-held lust that twitched the eBay finger when we saw the auction closing for just $4,500 with 5 minutes to spare. We punched in $4,855.55 at the last second and won the car for exactly that amount. It's a good thing, too, since now we love the convertible nearly as much as King Horsepower (whom, it would seem, the Impala's 283 has never met). But it's the greatest cruiser and daily driver in... RUSTY '56 CHEVY BEL AIR WAGON
This here's Chad's calling card. After a 59-day thrash to get it on the road, his '56 debuted at the 2005 Hot Rod Power Tour, where it caught the eye of the magazine editors who chose it for a feature story on budget rods that appeared in the October '05 issue. After that, Chad drove it on two Hot Rod Drag Week events. The wagon body is channeled over a complete '94 Caprice 9C1 cop-car chassis that still holds the original LT1 engine, though it's been augmented with... Read More >

THE CREW CAB '65 CHEVY CHEVELLE FOUR-DOOR
Our Chevelle sedan is a Louisiana car that found its way to Burbank, California, in the '70s, but it wound up rotting in a church-lady's backyard for a decade or so before we handed over $1,500 to rescue it. One hilarious road trip to the Baja 1000 later, we'd completely bonded to the Chevelle (and still have the stains to show for it) and dubbed it The Crew Cab. In Mexico we also adopted the car's witty mascot, Baja the Chihuahua. The car served a few months... Read More >

THE FAT & THE FURYOUS '73 Plymouth Fury III
Imagine finding a one-owner Mopar in an old guy's backyard, then paying just $200 for it! That was us. But now imagine that it's a gold '73 Fury four-door. Bummer, except it's got a 400 big-block, a 727, and an 8-3/4 that actually has a 3.23:1 centersection with a Sure-Grip because it's a factory towing-package car with all the beefy cop-car suspension and brakes plus a factory trans cooler and oil cooler. We bought the car to part it out, but it wound... Read More >
