Sweet, sweet overkill…that’s what this 1975 Toyota Celica coupe is all about. They are neat little cars on their own merit, but this particular car, built by Speed Warehouse, is just perfect…from the JDM rear-view mirrors on the fenders to the well-pressurized, 1,000 horsepower or so 2JZ 3.0L inline-six under the flip-forward hood. Yes, that’s correct: this little roller skate has enough power to give a driver who thinks he’s got enough cajones to get behind the wheel tunnel vision, and as you can see on the windshield, it’s packing a man pedal and six forward gears. We can get behind this little sport coupe…unfortunately, we might want to bring a jack, because after a day’s worth of roll-racing and drag-racing on an untested setup (the car was completed the day before it was loaded up for the race) there might be a weak point…or two…or even five…

I always thought those early Celicas were beautiful cars and here’s one that goes as good as it looks. But I see the trend for painting everything on wheels white has hit the US – and as a staunch Johnny Cash fan with a complete wardrobe to match I think that a few gallons of satin black and a portable sprayer would put that right…

I had a ’75 and ’76 Celica back in the early 80’s. Beat the living snot out of them, couldn’t kill that 20R engine!

Tough trying to find one now.

I agree with the normally incomprehensible Brit above. Those early Celica’s were/are a very nice looking car. Not a bad line on them, and pretty from any angle. Given unlimited funds, I’d have one with a 250-300 horse turbo 4, a 5 spd, and maybe a set of 15″ mini-litres to round out the package. They have a very attractive interior, so about the only thing needed is an upgrade to leather and a modern sound system.
