Nostalgia funny cars have singlehandedly elevated the profile of “nostalgia” drag racing higher than anyone could have predicted it would be even 10 years ago. At first the cars were a novelty and now they are an integral part of races all across the country. Like nostalgia top fuel cars, the greatest concentration of nostalgia funny cars are in California and that’s why races like the Reunion and the March Meet are the best place to see the largest fields and the quickest fields of these things in the world. With the two qualifying run format of the reunion, teams need to have their “stuff” in a pile right off the bat and there were some big runs and some surprising failures as there are at all of these races. We’ll have a full race report from Darr Hawthorne in a day or two to recap the action, so consider this gallery a nice warm up act.
There’s “real money” out there for nostalgia funny car racers on the IHRA circuit, at match races all over the country, the DRO series, the NHRA Heritage Series, and any number of small multiple race regional deals as well. Years ago a guy was telling me that nostalgia funny cars were going to be a “big deal” some day and I wasn’t really buying it. Well, clearly he was right and I was wrong. I’ve never been happier to be wrong about something in my life.
Make plans to get to Famoso in March if what you see here spins your crank!
