American Powertrain Tuesday Shift: Steve Clukey Pulls Lenco Levers and Adjusts the Rear View At 140mph

We’ve run some cool video of New England racer Steve “The Stickman” Clukey before. He runs a small block (340 based motor) Duster that he bought new way back in the day. The car has always had a stick in it. More accurately, it now has sticks in it because there is a Lenco currently in the transmission tunnel.

Aside from the awesome sound of a small block Mopar screaming its lungs out, the awesome wheelstand at the start that has Steve pulling second nearly before the front wheels are on the ground, and the always great nature of seeing Lenco levers fly, there’s even cooler stuff in this one.

Showing how focused he is as a bracket racer, Clukey reaches up and adjusts the rear view mirror to see his opponent charging hard at him at the top end. Consider that he is doing about 140mph when he makes the move. Why is he doing it? Basically, it is important to see your opponent coming at the top end of a bracket race so you can judge as to whether you are going to dump or power through the stripe. As you will see and hear, Clukey drives this car straight through the end of the run under power.

A four speed Lenco is the weapon of choice. The car has had a multitude of different transmissions in it over the years, all sticks. The Lenco was out for a while and then Clukey put it back in. Outside of the coolness that the trans exudes the buzz saw like stroker Mopar small block and the massive wheelies are also a great part of the show. People love the car and they go berserk when it carries the nose past the Christmas tree.

    Can someone explain how a delay box works on a stick car? Isn’t that why his arm jerked back at the start of the run?
