Justin Oney’s Drag Week 2014 Photo Diary – We Pick It Back Up In Great Bend, Kansas On Day Four

Justin Oney’s Drag Week 2014 Photo Diary – We Pick It Back Up In Great Bend, Kansas On Day Four

(Photos by Justin Oney) – Last week Justin Oney was like, “Hey are you going to run the rest of my photos from Drag Week?” I thought for a second and nearly barfed in my mouth because in all of the hullabaloo of the last few weeks, I had lost track of the series! He was right, there’s photos in this gallery from the second half of the day racing at SRCA Drag Strip in Great Bend, Kansas and then on the road photos of competitors cruising back to Tulsa for what would ultimately be a rain delayed finale to the event. This is actually a happy mistake because while looking out my window and seeing the leaves changing and my own announcing schedule drying up for the year as the racing schedule winds to a halt, it made my smile to remember these great days in September.

As you may or may not recall, it was COLD in Great Bend the morning we showed up and the track showed it for a little while, which was to be expected. As soon as we had some consistent fast runs being made and racers put the screws to their cars, it came around quick and the proof was in the elapsed time pudding. Mike Roy thundered down into the 7s for his best pass ever, Doug Cline ripped off a six second run to wow the crowd, and most racers were all smiles leaving the joint. That was except for the guys rebuilding their motors in the pits to give themselves a shot to return to Tulsa.

Perhaps our favorite story from Great Bend came from racer Scott Brown. He nicked a piston in his turbocharged LS powered 1953 Chevy and we put the call out for help. He was able to get a piston and rod assembly, did some really precision work in the pit with whatever he had handy to open up the ring gap and set about putting his car back together. In the meantime, a tow truck driver had driven in and parked himself across the pits from Brown, assuming that he’d have a customer by the looks of the yard sale environment around the Chevy. Brown told the guy that he wouldn’t be needing his services, but there he sat….right up until Brown fired up the car, waved, and happily drove out under his own power. Drag Week, bitches. That’s what it is all about!
