Jim Forbes is hardcore. The dude has an awesome blown big block 1955 Chevy that has run on multiple Drag Weeks, traveled tens of thousands of miles in normal driving, made more drag trip passes than even Jim can remember, and has long been his “calling card” with respect to hot rods. Last year he spruced up a 1950s era Chevy Suburban in a matter of weeks as well as a 1950s era Chevy pickup in record time. He hauled ass up to Bonneville in the Suburban. That pickup truck was boss,  so boss that Jim got an offer that he couldn’t refuse on the rig and sold it. That left those of us that knew him wondering what would be next. The ’55 is kind of locked into being what it is, Jim isn’t the kind of guy who would do something outlandish in the modern sense, and we just knew it was going to be retro and cool. He exceeded even our lofty expectations with the purchase of the 1962 Chevy II below and the plan to construct a 1960s period altered wheelbase A/FX version of the car. What’s even cooler is that Jim is not a guy who opens his waller unless it is 100% necessary, so he’s building this bad boy at his home shop the way guys did back in the day. This rules.

There’s one major departure from the classic garage hot rodders of yesteryear and Jim, though. Happily, Jim has a digital camera and those guys didn’t! He’s done an awesome job documenting his progress in a build thread on our forum section that you should find and follow because the man works fast. He’s planning on competing at Drag Week 2014 in this car and he’s not wasting any time. Lots of metal has been cut off, moved, replaced, or changed since the $500 hulk rolled into his shop.

As best we know this car will end up with a tube front axle on leaf springs, a high riding stance, and if we know Jim there will be a healthy big block residing between the front fenders. Rather than give away the whole build and Jim’s plans we want you to hit the link below and check it out for yourself. He’s been hustling, so there is plenty to look at and we’ll warn you ahead of time that the speed at which Jim works can be demoralizing for mere mortals like you and I. That being said, we just dig checking out his progress and seeing this instant classic come to life. How much cooler is it that the car will not only look the part but it will also haul ass and get raced like it should!

Yes, he yanked the 9″ axle out of the Suburban for this car and put an 8.5″ axle in the Suburban.

“. . . . the speed at which Jim works can be demoralizing for mere mortals like you and I.”

You mean people with regular full-time jobs away from home?
