There are lots of old pro stock cars running in a myriad of drag racing classes across the country. Top sportsman, super comp, super gas, and bracket action all contain machines that were at one time among the top of drag racing’s food chain. Why? Simply put, the cars work. Designed to lock horns with the best of their respective era, they can handle horsepower and they get on down the road so to speak. In this video we see one of Bruce Allen’s cars, a fourth generation Firebird running with the Pennzoil “Outlaw” octane booster livery still on the car exactly as it was back in the late 1990s when Allen raced it. The bad part of this video is the ending because the car is destroyed in a fiery crash at Mokan Dragway.
This was NOT a no-prep race. It was a fully prepped track but the thing does have a pretty narrow groove as evidenced by the video. Once the Firebird decides that it does not want to be in that narrow groove anymore, things get bad. The car wanders to the left and just as soon as that happens, it looses traction and comes across the track, smashing the wall and bursting into flames. The driver was thankfully OK but this was a titanic hit and there does not look to be much left of the rear end of the car.
It was cool that the car kept the Outlaw paint on it this whole time. If it can be rebuilt it would be awesome for the owner to keep it looking this way, if for not other reason that it reminds us of an era in pro stock that we were in love with.
Rough stuff.
He would have been fine if he hadn’t tried gassing it in the marbles. That run was over. Why do that? I’m sure he’s thinking the same thing.
