The White-Out: This 1979 Chrysler Three Hundred Is A Tempting Offer On The Table

The White-Out: This 1979 Chrysler Three Hundred Is A Tempting Offer On The Table

The Chrysler Cordoba was the one bright spot during the second half of the Seventies for Chrysler Corporation. While Monacos, New Yorkers and Newports stacked up in lots, while the Aspen and Volaré twins were being recalled over a ton of rushed-into-production teething issues, and while the company as a whole was pretty much on everybody’s Death Watch list, the Cordoba (and to a much lesser degree, the Dodge Charger SE, which was identical save for taillights and grille) were actually smash hits. A repurposed B-body, the Cordoba took a cue from the successful Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Oldsmobile Cutlass: take the midsize coupe, add luxury items until the price only just started to get stupid, give it a classy look, and watch the money come in. It worked, surprisingly enough, even after Chrysler effectively aped the Monte Carlo’s stacked headlight treatment for the front end.

By 1979, though, not even the Cordoba could escape the gravity of the situation at Chrysler. With the company nearing the event horizon of a black hole, it seemed, what better time would it be to push a sporty Cordoba model? That’s the 1979 Chrysler Three Hundred, a dressed up, white with red/white/blue trim machine, with a 360 cubic inch engine and all of the bells and whistles. And that’s what some enterprising individual took and hot-rodded, and bless them for it. The 360, now a 408 stroker, is still there, force-fed by a ProCharger and backed by a built up 727 automatic. Grunt? No problem whatsoever. The interior is a mix of the original parts and pieces and custom trim, flanked by the appropriate cagework…and a picture of Jack Nicholson’s Jack Torrance character from The Shining in the “Heeere’s Johnny!” moment in the backseat. Part luxurious 1970s boat, part supercharged brawler, and proof that any car becomes better when you add power and character, this Three Hundred is fantastic. Except maybe for the cowl hood and front bumper treatment…a flat hood and a stock bumper that’s been gutted of the beam might be better. But you get the point, don’t you?

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

This beauty desperately needs a coat of fine black gloss paint – in fact I’d ditch the street racer look and turn it into a Pro Touring car with new brakes, suspension, wheels and tyres so it handles as well as it looks,

    1. Mopar or No Car

And ditch the blower so you can have A/C while touring. Maybe not an issue on your side of the pond. If you’re going to repaint and hack up a car, start with the same body Charger, Magnum or Cordoba, not a rare car that was only offered in white.

Not bad looking BUT they should have extended the roll bar into the engine compartment after cutting out 1/2 of the structure in the engine compartment

Ditch the bumper for an original. Weld pro stars all around and put the wheel wells back in. Good to go.
