Awesome History: A Pair Of Tatra Cars From the Czech Republic – One A Champion Nazi Prototype and The Other A Nazi Killer

There’s interesting history behind pretty much everything in the modern world. Even the most mundane stuff has a story and when we look back at cars, they ALL have something cool happening behind the curtain. Take these two old Tatra models that were on display at the Retromobile show in Paris. Yeah, we know. Paris. What the hell is there a car show there for, right? Well France has a heck of an interesting automotive history and this particular show brings in the coolest old cars from all over Europe and really important machines as well. These two cars are exactly that.

Tatra is a brand of car that was made in the Czech Republic for about 100 years. The name is derived from a mountain range in the small country and the place was run by a guy named Hans Ledwinka who is among the greatest mechanical minds that has lived in the modern world. Knowing this, it’s no big surprise that the first car you’ll see was a prototype commissioned by the German government in their process of developing a “People’s car”. Well, when you get a load of this thing you’ll understand where Dr Porsche got his ideas from! This Tatra is basically the original Beetle with slightly less slick looking sheetmetal around it.

The second car is a 1933 Tatra Model 77 which is just a bad ass looking hunk of iron. The Model 77 was the “Nazi Killer” because this thing had a pretty good sized V8 engine hanging on the back of it. The engine was an air-cooled Hemi if you can believe that. The cars were called Nazi killers because they were big, powerful and rare. These were the perfect attributes that Nazi officers wanted in the cars they commandeered. The handling was tricky in these things. Think of a cross between a Corvair and a Ford Explorer with under-inflated tires. Lots of them got wrecked.

Cool cars and history here. Take a second to absorb it.
