A Yak 3 Airplane And Porsche GT3 RS Feature Like None Other. This Is Bad Ass

A Yak 3 Airplane And Porsche GT3 RS Feature Like None Other. This Is Bad Ass

(Words and Photos by Dennis Vos) This little “write up” is about what happens when you have 3 photographers going at it on two different objects during a private session somewhere in Belgium.

As a photographer of some magnificent things here in Europe, you regular have the chance of meeting some fantastic people along your photographic journey. One of my regular contacts for a few years has been the Yak Association and their Yak-3 flown by the always friendly Rick van der Graaf. This Yak 3 is a pure beast and is the only one flying in this configuration in Europe. Rick performs regularly on air shows across Europe, keeping his flying routine in a prefect balance between speed and agility. This Russian design is regularly misunderstood but does fly like a dream. The radial ensures for enough power and music when doing an aerial ballet, but also generates a lot of speed when going flat out full throttle. If you follow the Reno Air races there is a Yak 3 flying there called “Steadfast”.

Fellow photographer Jeroen van Veenendaal and I arranged a night shoot with them, including a newer toy, a brand new Porsche GT3 RS. Although this car is only a few months old, it suited quite well with the company of it’s older Russian friend. I invited another photographer (Mark de Bruin) with me who didn’t knew what to expect. It was raining cats and dogs while we arrived car and plane were still inside so we started on some stationary and detail shots. Luckily if you have a big hangar to your availability, you have a lot of great details you can work with as we all had a some ideas we wanted to try. There was a small gap in the rain and after a very good meal we rolled out the Yak for some music and flames. Everything played a long and after the run we rolled her back inside again for some shots with some smoke.

Eventually we ended up with a shoot that lasted almost 6 hours, but what a results we got. We all went for different things so ended up with quite a wide variety of photo’s. It also resulted in pictures showing that every photographer has his own view on things and even if it looks like it won’t do any good, the end results sometimes in nice surprises. It’s great to work with people that share the same passion, enthusiasm and willpower to produce high quality photo’s. That enthusiasm is quite catchy to be honest and make u try to excel what you are doing. It motivates us even more to continue this wonderful hobby and I’m sure that we can produce some nice pictures for you to enjoy in 2016.

Not a Yak…Yak 3’s had inline engines. Might be a Lavochkin La-5 or 7 in a trainer version. MiGs were also inline engines.
