As we have often talked about here, there are engine assemblers in this world and then there are engine builders. Sandy Wilkins falls in that second category as you will see in the video below. Wilkins has a history in the world of NASCAR racing, working on developmental “skunk works” type projects, and in the world of NHRA and IHRA drag racing he is one of the most feared Top Sportsman racers in the nation. Simply put, Sandy (otherwise known as Sandflea) is a true engine and racing guru. He’s also an awesome guy, making this video all that much sweeter to watch.

Sandy’s racing engine outfit in North Carolina is awesome and as he and his guys build this RY45 variant you’ll get a behind the scenes peek at his confines. The place is modern, spotless, and certainly one of the most interesting race engine shops we have ever laid eyes on. His background in professional motorsports certainly shows through here.

The engine we are going to watch get built and run is based off of an RY45 (Roush-Yates 4.5 bore inch bore spacing) which is an aluminum version of the Ford NASCAR FR9 competition engine. The RY45 is interesting as they took what they learned with the FR9 and made it better, lighter, and more capable.

There are lots of secrets in this one and while we see the whole process there are certain things like rod length, valve spring package, and other stuff that are kept close to the vest. Watch this build and then see the engine perform on the dyno!

Sandy’s wife, Michelle, has quite the version of this engine in her Top Dragster ride. It is the 460 incher mentioned early in the video.
