Best of 2019: Watch Petter Solberg Rip His Subaru Through The Fench Alps – Insanity

(By Eric Rood) – The 2016 World Rally Championship kicks off this weekend as it usually does with the monumental Rallye Monte Carlo and what better way is there to prepare than to watch this classic video of Norwegian rally ace Petter Solberg ripping over the world’s most famous rally stage?

The Col de Turini is a public road that traverses a mountain pass in the French Alps and is renowned for its narrow cut into steep cliffs. It’s a long way down if you leap the fences, in other words, while caning your Subaru WRX over the twisting mountain roads. The WRC has used parts of it to make rally stages for years, running it at various times covered in snow or even at night with only headlights to guide drivers through the blanket of alpine darkness.

Solberg’s run is over one of the longer configurations (sans snow, though the pacenotes indicate possibility of ice, and darkness) and while 20 minutes doesn’t sound like a lot, the constant flow of directions from co-driver Phil Mills will render those proficient in Rally Pacenote a little confused. How anyone can manage to understand that while driving 10/10ths and avoiding the cliff face on one side and the chasm beyond the 18-inch stone wall on the other is unimaginable to a heathen like myself.

Yet the charismatic Petter manages it like he’s driving to the grocery store. No big deal: Manage the handbrake perfectly around every single one of dozens of switchback hairpins and apex corners with a slab of stone six inches from the bumper. Another day at the office, another stage win.

And all that is to say nothing of the thousands of rally fans perched on the edges of cliffs just to catch a glimpse of these 300-horsepower beasts navigating the winding Cul de Turini.

The WRC crosses the Col de Turini this Sunday on the rally’s final day. The first 2016 rally wraps up in Monaco, where Prince Albert will crown the rally champion.
