In the fall the massive and cool HSR Classic 24 Hour will take place at Daytona International Speedway. This event brings most of the nation’s greatest vintage race cars together and showcases in them in a format only a near week long event can. From testing on Wednesday through the start of the Classic 24 on Saturday at 1:00 and its conclusion on Sunday there will be hundreds of cars to see that range from classic American Trans-Am and GT cars to exotics and killers like the Porsche 962 below.
This video features our ol’ pal Jim Pace as he hauls around the road course at Daytona in a Porsche 962. A rare beast, only about 75 of these things were ever sold to the racing public for competition during a couple of year stretch in the early 1980s. Featuring a turbocharged six cylinder engine, it makes LOTS of power and Jim puts it to good use in the video. Perhaps our favorite part of the thing is the live narration form Jim as he is driving the car, walking us through the line and the philosophy he is driving by. We don’t know what speeds he is hitting on the banking but turing nearly 8,000 RPM in high gear with that car has to have it somewhere near 200, right?
The duality of the flat curves in the infield and the steep banking on the oval is cool to experience from behind that very round windshield that these cars had. A great car, a great driver, and a great video. Get some!
