(By Tom Lohnes) – Now, I am not at all a fan of the new BMW 4-series convertible. I think the absurd front end paired with the awkward proportions of the coupe minus the roof just isn’t a good look. Well, the new M4 convertible is out, and my opinion has changed completely.
Well, it turns out the standard 4-series ‘vert, also called the G33, wasn’t wide enough. Why? The drop-top M4 is nearly a foot wider, and it remedies every bad angle of the 430i. What’s new on this M4 is that it is only available in the competition trim, which means 503 horsepower and an automatic. Als, it is exclusively available with BMW’s M-Xdrive AWD system, which has a driver-selectable RWD option, so don’t worry that you can’t slide your ragtop M4, because you most definitely can.
This M4 takes a departure from the convertible before it by using a soft-top instead of the big, bulky hard-top that added nearly 400 pounds to the last one. This will benefit handling, as well as improve the overall look of the car, doing away with the awkward roofline the previous generation had.
So, would you get the coupe or convertible? I’m thinking convertible, just to look at it all day.
May be a fantastic car, but it looks like the modern interpretation of the edsel.
Looks like they didn’t fix the ugly part. There is no way to look at the front of that car and be thrilled with it’s looks. I believe the term is ‘fugly’.
