Morning Symphony: A Monte Carlo Rally-Winning 1978 Porsche 911 SC Being Wailed On By The Original Driver!

Have you ever watched any of those clickbait videos that claim to be “oddly satisfying”? You know the kind, where the slice of cake is cut picture-perfect with not one crumb in sight, or the guy playing mini-golf nails a geometrically-challenging hole-in-one like it’s nothing? I live on the Internet, so every now and then I watch one and my favorite form of the “oddly satisfying” video is watching a master of a craft at work making the radically difficult and demanding look like child’s play. Every motion, every change in direction is calculated and executed with the kind of precision saved for military drill teams. That is very satisfying to watch, indeed.

You’re going to go for a ride in the 1978 Porsche 911 SC that Jean-Pierre Nicolas drove to victory in the 1978 Monte Carlo Rally. This is the real-deal car and the real-deal driver, forty years removed from that initial victory. Forty years on the human body normally dulls senses and reactions, and while it’s apparent that Nicolas can’t drop into the 911 like he used to, once he’s in, all of the muscle memory comes back like it never left, as if every day for the last forty years he took a factory works Porsche rally car out onto the streets and didn’t stop driving until the tires were wasted and the fuel tank was empty. If you squint you can even see just how hard he is pushing the flat-six along. Just remember, 73 years old, driving like he’s running from the cops with razor-sharp skills. Grandpa can still get it going when he needs to!
