Ride In The Rip Roaring Hill Climb Monster Of Kevin Mackrell – AWD, V8, 800hp, Datsun 260!

In this video we take you to the country of Australia and more specifically the Mt. Alma Mile Hillclimb, an event that has been going on for about 10 years. Like many hillclimbs, this is a short course that is all about brutal acceleration, hard cornering, and having a large enough set to keep your foot down longer than all comers. In this case we get to ride along with Australian racer Kevin Mackrell who happens to have one of the most BangShift approved hill climb cars we have ever seen. This thing is brutal and there’s good reason for it.

Mackrell’s car is a Datsun 260Z that is powered by a Chevy engine that ranges from 6.0L to 6.6L depending on what you read. It has a clutchless manual transmission that he rips up and down through the gears in this video, and oh yeah…it is all wheel drive! Horsepower estimates range from 800-880, again depending on what you read but this thing rips hard out of the hole and every time he mashes the gas coming out of a corner you can see the suspension squat and the thing starts to make the geography around itself blur.

There are a bunch of videos on the web of Mackrell running this car but we dug this one because he builds up a heck of a head of steam before he has to get on the brakes and really start driving the thing up the short but technical course at Mt. Alma.

Every time we see a hill climb video or see photos of the cars that people run, we get reminded of Bonneville. There’s so much creativity, hot rodding, and downright imagination built into this stuff that it really seems awesome to us. We’re guessing an Aussie reader or three will let us know more about the car and the man who drives it but until then, enjoy this video!
