Synergistic: An SN-95 Mustang Packing A Toyota 2JZ Inline-Six. Cue The Hate Mail!

Some people can’t survive on watching the world burning alone. They have to stand next to the flames with a can of Jet A and insist on throwing cupfuls of fuel onto the fire just to make sure that the flames are at the right height. They do things that most people cannot fathom, things that most people will shake their heads near-uncontrollably over. Their moves might be genius but don’t ask any of the detractors, because the pitchforks and torches are being prepared.

SN-95 Mustangs are at the bottom of their value curve right now. If you’re looking for cheap fun, you can’t do wrong with one. A modified Fox platform, two solid V8 engine platforms, a V6 that can be tweaked and tune, an IRS setup that can be swapped in, a live-axle if you like old-school tech with a new-school wrapper…how can you not love a Mustang? The nameplate alone evokes Americana, burnouts, Friday night activities, and crowds running for their lives at parking lot shows. Hey, don’t blame me, tons of YouTube videos can’t be wrong.

The Toyota 2JZ is a legendarily potent turbocharged inline-six that is a key piece of the puzzle of why fourth-generation Supras are now selling for over $100,000. I’ve driven lesser versions of the engine and have walked away from the experience pleasantly surprised. With a good turbocharger and a manual transmission, a 2JZ is the kind of engine that validates Japanese-origin horsepower. Pick your poison: Supra, Soarer, Chaser, Aristo, a number of Lexus products…any of them will fit the bill.

Combine Mustang and 2JZ, and get your marshmallows ready, because there will be flames.
