Crowded House: The VW ID.4 Is The Latest, Most Capable, and Least Expensive Addition To The Electric Car Lineup In The USA

(By Tom Lohnes) – Forget the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen is making the EV for the people in the ID.4

With standard RWD, at least 201 horsepower, and a ton of space inside, the ID.4 is not VW’s newest car, but it is just arriving stateside right about now, and it looks really promising. Outside, the ID.4 looks like any other Volkswagen, meaning that it carries the styling cues found through the brand’s lineup. Well,  just with no grille and a lightbar that spans across the front and rear of the car. Inside, things get funky.

The car doesn’t need you to tell it to turn on, instead just get in with the key and press the brake pedal, and you’re ready to go. To turn it off, simply leave the car with the key in your pocket. To shift the ID.4 Into gear you must twist a very angular-looking knob mounted on the dash. Range numbers for the base ID.4 which costs $31,000 is 230 miles, which is great for the money. It’s only range competition price-wise is the Chevy Bolt, which can cover 260 but is a lot smaller and dorkier-looking.

Overall, the ID.4 is one of the most compelling EV buys you can get. But, I get the EV lifestyle isn’t for everyone, so I do not predict that this will take the global sales crown from the Golf hatchback anytime soon.
