This 1950 Ford F-5 Wrecker Is Complete, Awesome, And Calling Our Name

This 1950 Ford F-5 Wrecker Is Complete, Awesome, And Calling Our Name

Oh, c’amon! That’s what I yelled when I was sent the link to this absolutely awesome 1950 Ford F-5 wrecker that’s for sale in the center of the country. The thing that slays me about this truck is not the fact that it is complete or the fact that it has a Ford engine, or the fact that outside of a fresh set of rubber it can drive away, the thing that slays me about it is that I do not own it!

Normally trucks of this vintage are not in any sort of shape for a hack like me to even be interested in. The are normally rotted to pieces and missing hard to find stuff that would either have to be scratch made or somehow “deleted” from the rig. Not this one. The whole truck, the glass, the fenders, the wrecker unit, the exterior tool boxes, all of it is right here. Damn.

The truck currently has a 302 and a four speed in it (top loader?) which obviously is not right as this thing would have come with a flathead in it. The owner is selling a rebuilt flathead engine to come with the truck in the event the new owner wants to make it as right as rain (I wold want to put the flathead in it along with the proper four speed that comes with it). The 302 is awesome and it would be the right motor to drive this sucker home on, but if you wanted the true, slow as molasses nature of this truck at your full disposal, that would be the right move.

How about the awesome wrecker body, by the way? We do not know who manufactured it but they did a killer job and even went as far as to contour it so it made sense with the shape of the cab and all. How radical is that? Lordy this thing is perfect.

How cool would it be to show up at a car show/cruise in with a ’49 Ford in tow? I’d put a “just married”sign in the’49 lol.

Local dude has this trucks twin, not sure what is powering it but it gets driven.
He did remove the boom and replaced it with a 5th wheel. It is a shop truck, it is used to pull trailers and boats to his garage for repairs as far as I can tell. Pretty slick rig.

It’s a beautiful old truck, but I have just never gotten the fascination with wreckers/tow trucks.
