Truckin’ Awesome: This B-Model Mack Wrecker Is Absolutely Awesome Stuff

Truckin’ Awesome: This B-Model Mack Wrecker Is Absolutely Awesome Stuff

(By Greg Rourke) – Alright Lohnes, keep it in your pants. It’s a B model Mack, it has a wrecker on the back, and two sticks protruding from the floor. Get a room.

The B model Mack was produced from 1953 to 1965. This example, the B61 was available with inline 6 and V8 diesels, and an inline 6 gasser. That must have been a lot of fun. This baby says it’s powered by a 237 Mack, which should be a 673 cube inline 6 diesel. It also says it’s a 1941, which must be a typo. Two sticks likely means a triplex transmission, so get used to shifting about 8 times before you make it across the intersection. Power steering is unlikely, as is anything else resulting in any sort of driver comfort. The wrecker body looks more modern that what it likely would have been originally equipped with. Legroom and headroom in these old Macks is acceptable for young masters Tom and Jack Lohnes, but not for anyone over 5 foot 5.

Despite these trucks being designed as torture devices for professional gearjammers, the classic good looks are the face of Mack for civilians. Brian, put down the pen and back away from the home equity loan papers.

My wife can’t deal with another letter from the Holy-Ole-Assholes, and my wallet can’t fulfil that part of my wishlist, but the mental gears are turning again. This and the 80’s L-series Fords, are the only non-Studebaker, old dogs on my list.

Wrecker body from the wrong decade ruins it for me, and it is overpriced by about 5-8K… otherwise I like it..
