Controversial No More: Mercedes Adds SUV Variant To Its EQS EV Portfolio

Controversial No More: Mercedes Adds SUV Variant To Its EQS EV Portfolio

(By Tom Lohnes) – The Mercedes-EQ EQS came out to a lot of controversy. With un-Mercedes-like looks, an insane optional dashboard setup, and shocking numbers, not everyone totally agreed on the EQS until it hit our shores. Since then, the reviews have been majorly positive, and owners of both 450+ and 580 models seem to be enjoying themselves in their new EV luxury sedans. Well, everyone wants an S-class, but some people have a family, so Mercedes made the GLS SUV. The same thing is happening with the EQS, so they did the exact same thing. Meet the EQS SUV.

Looking more like an EQS wagon than an SUV, the high-riding version of the electric sedan sports a similar design, just adjusted to the larger proportions. Inside, the EQS SUV comes with either a two-row, 5-seat setup, or an optional three-row, 7-seat option that is expected to account for the majority of sales. In the second row, you get the same niceties as the sedan, just with more room all around. Up front, Mercedes’ famous 56-inch hyperscreen is optional on the base 450 model, but standard on the better 580.

Speaking of models, the EQS SUV comes in two flavors. There is the base, volume-model 450, with optional AWD and 355 horsepower regardless of motor choice, the EQS450 SUV should really be all you need for daily duties. Also fit for daily duties is the range. In the RWD 450 model, Mercedes estimates a range of up to 373 miles, which is really good for such a large vehicle. Upgrade to the 580 model, and you get standard dual-motor AWD, 536 horsepower, but a range decrease to an estimated 300 miles. Still not bad, but if you want a road-tripper, go for the 450. There also should be a 751-hp AMG model on the way to really fill your speed cravings.

As far as pricing goes, we won’t really know until next year. Like the GLS to the S-class, expect the SUV to be slightly cheaper, but not by much. A starting price of around $99,000 is definitely possible.
