Restoration Video: Watching A Massive 120+ Year Old Drill Press Being Restored Is Awesome!

We love restoration videos around here and the fact that they all seem to have a personality all their own makes ’em even more enjoyable. While it is neat to see hand tools fixed up and smaller stuff fixed, the big things really get our attention and watching a massive 120+ year old drill press being restored is a new level of bad ass in this realm. Saved from an old factory, this thing is so big that the dude had to disassemble it just to get it out of the building. Using loads of exposed gears and leather belts, the unit is absolutely stunning when finished. It even has an automated function that the guys get working as well.

You know a machine is heavy duty when a chain fall is used to move various parts of it into place. Pieces like the central mast and then the head of the press where the gears and sheaves are mounted look as heavy as they apparently are. This thing is just a huge collection of cast iron and steel sculpture if you ask us and the neatest thing is that the press is fully functional when done.

Rather than run the thing off a steam engine like the original factory it came out of was likely powered with, these guys convert it to electric power and you can watch it work by the time the video is over. We’re loving every inch of this job. The guys get creative by fixing broken gears with collars and other tricks as well. So cool!
