Cool Find: This Mid-1960s Ford N-Series Wrecker Is Rough And Tumble But Shows Major Promise

Canadian BangShifter James Forgan had tipped me off to this cool 1966 Ford N-series wrecker that’s for sale up in the Great White North a while back and I dropped the ball. Thankfully no one has bought the thing yet so therefore it is still actively listed on the Canadian website Kijiji. This is an interesting truck and not just for the fact that it looks like it could take the central role in a horror movie. This is an interesting truck because it is a pretty rare N-series Ford from the middle 1960s.

Call us crazy but we think these are some of the neatest looking trucks of the 1960s. The N-Series did not have the longevity of platforms like the F and L series. Instead these were built from 1962 through 1969. This one is listed as a ’66 and it does appear to be one. In terms of their styling not a lot changed over the years but there is a telltale to illustrate if a truck is from the earlier of later part of the production run and that’s the roof. Headroom was at a premium in the earlier trucks so engineers changed the roof to give drivers and passengers a little more room in the cab.

One of the things that makes these trucks so interesting looking is their stubby nose. They are not a COE but lots of people think that they are. The short hood and blunt nose give that impression but they ain’t! Do not be fooled. The vast majority of these trucks had gas burning engines in them. Those mills ranged from 401ci all the way up to the mighty 534ci monster that was a real thirsty workhorse. It sees like this truck would likely have one of the smaller mills pushing it down the road.

While there’s lots of work necessary to make this a looker, a winch will be the most significant mechanical addition that’ll be needed to get the truck functioning again. This would be a really cool restoration project for anyone into either N-series trucks or vintage wreckers.

It would be cool to get it mechanically sound and leave it looking like this. You could be the bad guy in a Duel like situation every day.
