Have Any Of You Ever Seen One Of These? Is It A Pump Or Compressor?

Have Any Of You Ever Seen One Of These? Is It A Pump Or Compressor?

Driving in L.A. traffic yesterday evening I was passed by an oil transport truck that had this mounted to the front. It caught my eye and I looked at it and mentally scratched my head. Traffic got in the way and it got up ahead of me and I pulled out my phone. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get past it enough with my phone in one hand and the steering wheel in my other to get any better picture than this. Later, we caught up to it as we were getting off the freeway and it appears that the “cylinder heads” have just one giant exhaust port, and that the small block in question is attached to a gearbox or transmission with another engine on the other side of it that seems to be powering the contraption. This lead me to believe that this Small Block Chevy must be acting as an air compressor or pump of some kind.

Anyone have more info? I did some Google poking and can’t find anything specific.

Compressor. Look at the lugs on that pot to the left. Looks to me like it’s holding compressed air and…

Pop off valve on the manifold above the cylinders.
