Their names are Yves Rossy and Vince Reffet and they are two of the bravest and perhaps craziest human beings on planet Earth. It was Rossy who developed a wearable set of carbon fiber wings that also carry some small but powerful turbines to allow sustained flight. To date he has made notable voyages in the Alps and attempted at flying between two continents (a short hop, obviously not across the Atlantic) but this stunt that he recently performed with Reffet may be his lifetime calling card. Commissioned by Dubai and Emirates Airline, we see one of the luxo Emirates Airbus A380s flying over the Palm Jumeirah and Dubai skyline as the two men with there jet powered wings fly in formation with the massive plane. Months of planning went into the stunt and it is visually stunning.
The risks on something like this range from the completely obvious (hello!) to the far more subtle. Does anyone really now what it is like to be in the “dirty” air around a jet the size of an A380? Could the airplane filming this junk get to close and cause a problem? Would someone make a mistake and cause all of this stuff to plummet out of the sky? The amount of trust involved here is incalculable. The skill and balls levels are reasonably pegged to the end of the gauge to boot.
This was not faked, this was not made on a computer screen, this was not doctored. These guys did it! We have a behind the scenes video for you tomorrow but we want to you watch the real deal right now. The amount of pressure on the camera crew in this situation is immense as well. Missing the shot here simply cannot happen at all. High stakes poker all around! #hellojetman rules!
