Lohnes-Bait: This 1945 REO Speed Wagon Should Do The Trick!

Lohnes-Bait: This 1945 REO Speed Wagon Should Do The Trick!

Faster than he can belt out, “…and I’m gonna keep on lovin’ you”, Lohnes will probably be head-over-heels for this 1945 REO Speed Wagon. It’s got all of the classic Lohnes weakness points: it’s an old work beast of a truck, it’s got some age to it, it’s probably geared down so low that 45 miles per hour is the upper register, and the interior is as purpose-built as they get.

The second major brand of automobiles dreamed up by Ransom E. Olds, REO started off well but by the end of World War II, the company had financial issues and broke apart slowly. The car business went first, then the trucks moved under White Motor Company before the 1967 merger that brought about Diamond-REO Trucks. This is the classic, fully independent REO, the truck that became the brand’s hallmark, the machine that was built from 1915 through about 1953 or so. We’re sure Lohnes would love a crack at the “Gold Crown” 268ci six-cylinder, and would love nothing more than to see this classic lurch into life one more time.

Could you get any more utilitarian? Shorten the frame ala Finnegan, chrome the rims, and drive it.
