Doh! Are IRS's even more sensitive to wheel hop than a conventional axle?
    Escaped on a technicality.

They can be ... I've seen some pretty impressive blown-up stuff at the Super Coupe Shootout. The 89-up T-Birds and Cougars had IRS, and the SC 3.8 had lots of low-end torque. With the stick tranny, wheelhop could be pretty deadly, experienced it first-hand a few times.

Anyone who has driven a SVT Cobra knows all too well about wheelhop. You either pedal it or you break stuff. A good spring and shock package, along with bushings, can fix this completely

Had a Cobra.....the wheel hop was BAD.

First year the track opened (2003) a guy showed up with a SVT Cobra. Second pass he shelled one of the shafts. At that time IIRC, only SVT dealers could do service - so that was a 110 mile tow on a flat bed to the SVT dealer in San Angelo. Plus parts. Run whatcha brung, hope you brung enough spares.

I've seen lots of Cobras bust the half shafts but never seen one of them blow up the center section.

That one shattered like fine china.

The best are when Ford 9-inchers break and the pinion gear is still attached to the drive shaft laying on the track.

Does anyone have the video of the kid crashing a ferrari at a drag strip?

Nothing beats the classic "C-clip" failure though. Epic carnage!
