Re: Top Fuel Rotary Engine!
Well if it sounds good, it'll be the first one i ever heard that did. ;D
But man they might be onto something. Given the Apex seals are the weak link in
a rotary, and that topfuel motors are torn down after every race, they might be gold.
They've got the whole casting to contain the extreme combustion pressures.
Man, I'm kinda excited to see what comes of it, given the weight savings (across the board) i.e. Rotating assembly,block,etc...

That sounds like my weed eater when it's idling.

Re: Top Fuel Rotary Engine!
There's one that shows up at our local track. It is normally aspirated fed by two Weber carburetors with open exhaust. It is hands down the loudest and most obnoxious sounding thing at the track. To say it sounds like a chain saw on amphetamines is an understatement. I would love to here what a blown nitro burning one would sound like.

Re: Top Fuel Rotary Engine!
I have owned about 5 Rx-7s. I have turboed, Webered, Ported, EFIied them all, all have blown to bits. I hate em. My 83 Rx I said screw it and dropped a 5.0L V8 in it. Never been happier about it. Yes they can make incredible horsepower with 3 moving parts blah blah. I have seen Abel Iberra lay down 8 sec passes in his Rx-8, but they have to put new rotors in it on every other run. Being sponsored by Mazda helps. But the design flaw is the apex seals. Timing, fuel, water temp have to be perfect always- period especially pressurized ones. This is a money pit project.

Re: Top Fuel Rotary Engine!
Isn't any Topfuel motor a money pit.
I'm no Wankel fan but i won't argue with the potential.
You make the case about changing "Rotors" every other run
So, the piston engines get torn down as well.
Rotarys are BAD for DD usage, but this might be it.
I'm very curious, are they using the 13b? Or is it a special billet piece.
If they go with a custom "casing" i wouldn't be too worried about it.
The Wankel's are skittish, weird little engines. Perfect for all out racing
where the engine will be properly warmed up, run, and torn down.
I'm ready for something more in depth than the current
website.
