Re: New 3.7L V6 is the Base Engine for 2011 Mustangs

Is it enough to beat Camaro's 304-horsepower DOHC GDI V6?

A quick back of the envelope calculation suggests that both the 2011 Mustang 6 and the Camaro 6 should slot in at around 12.8 pounds per pony.

That's hardly a knockout punch, but the Mustang's lighter weight might give it the edge. Moreover, without seeing the torque curves and gearing, it's hard to project which 2011 "secretary special" will be the quickest and fastest.

At least Ford Motor Company's doing something, even if it doesn't really look like a "best in class" move at this juncture.

The other point to the swap is that it adds some smoothness and refinement to the base car, instead of that bored and stroked 1972 2.6L European V6 with an OHC conversion. I've driven the Lincoln MKS with the 3.7, nice mill.

The EcoBoost version is going to be really interesting.

If somebody made the EcoBoost Mustang all wheel drive, we'd even have a Nissan GTR killer. (Although the Taurus SHO may fit that description too. Whoever came up with a twin turbo AWD Taurus must have a warped sense of humor. In a good way.)

The new SHO will be neat, but at 4,000 lbs. and 365 hp, it won't be a GTR killer. :P

Well, it might kill some GTR transmissions if any of them try drag racing a SHO. The weight is pretty close, but you're right, the horsepower is off.

I don't think ford can make a transaxle that can handle much torque - even the gm six speed one they use now
              fwd is a pox

maybe they could buy the 4t80e now from general marxism

GM performs a paper-shuffling "hop up" for the 2011 Camaro.

The 2011 Camaro V-6 engine completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 278 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm. This rating is eight horsepower higher than the previous year and also marks an increase in torque from the 2010 rating of 273 lb-ft.

"The 304 horsepower in the 2010 Camaro was actually a conservative rating on our end," said Tom Sutter, GM V-6 chief engineer. "But we knew already that this award-winning engine produced at least the amount of power we stated, but now we've gone the extra step in certifying the engine for this application and have verified an additional 8 horsepower."

How convenient. They change no parts or electronics and suddenly "find" an extra 8 horsepower. That's Government Motors for 'ya.

Of course that extra 8 h.p. still has to lug aroung ~ 300 pounds more weight than Mustang's hot new six (that is until GM diets the Camaro by weighing it on a special scale . . . ) ;)

That's SOP for any manufacturer anymore. Obviously, "finding" nickel and dime horsepower must translate into money at some point in the chain, or else you would not see it. I think that sometimes it's the honest result of research subsequent to engine development, or a new exhaust manifold, or something along those lines. And then, you have incremental "releases" of new tune profiles, or internals, or combonations at predictable intervals to "freshen up" a product.

A friend of mine has a '08 Corvette with some exhaust butterfly arrangement that (I guess) is optional equipment. GM rates the LS3 in his Vette at one figure if you do not have this thing, and 3 more if you do... Whatever. The car sounds wonderful now that he's installed a manual control and can switch it open at will.

What's important about the Camaro/Mustang battle is that it's going to be a legit battle again. It's good for both companies. The Camaro guys can be happy they have a car again that does not suck, and is fast and affordable, and the Mustang guys can take the paper bag off their heads because they are going to get a engine that actually can make the Mustang get out of it's own way, and not get shamed by a FWD Impala.

They are both looking to carve into the traditional demographics, and steal back some of the "ricers" that they lost in the 90's and 00's, and I think they are both on a good track with it.
