One of the few things I designed and had made was a power steering bracket. I sent the drawings and a cardboard templet to a friend in Sacramento and he fabbed up what I wanted. It was insanely simple design. Basically, just a 1/4 inch thick plate with three holes drilled in it and a nut welded to it. It came out great and it's been on the car ever since. He made me a second one as well.

A cardboard template with any important dimensions noted is by far the easiest thing to work from and almost guaranteed to be accurate, as it can be used itself to test the idea out. Templates can be made for formed profiles as well. Cool.

and here I thought I was doing good saving the lifter box from the new ones, and putting the old ones in it.

I've almost always found that taking a few hours to do projects like this pays off big in the long run.

Sometimes just doing simple things around the shop like adding a hook to hang extension cords over a few outlets in the shop - has saved me time and frustration over the years.

I have a block I drilled a buch of blind holes in many years ago to keep holley jets in, years before those fancy billet pieces started showing up in catalogues.

Man Bill - that should really come in handy with all the engines you build.

This is another reason I need to keep an eye out for a sheetmetal brake.... there will never be enough tools!

Nice work Loren! I always enjoy reading the fab shop column. It's always cool to have an idea in your head and then hit the steel pile and make what you've been imagining. I've made a bunch of cool little parts at work from the scrap steel and scrap sheetmetal pile, everything from custom tools for a certain job to making cool shifter handles. Last week I whipped up a sheetmetal holder for my Blackberry phone so it will sit in the ash tray in my Cavalier and not go flying to the floor at every corner.

Nothing like Loren makes but its fun to play with ideas and put projects together.
