Brian: great photo pictorial of the teardown. And you had a lot of us on the edge of our seats with the "Sword in the Stone" thread (well, maybe leaning forward in our chairs just a little bit). Glad to see you came out the boss!Michael from Hampton Roads

I'm not seeing the horrendous wear on the crank...maybe the pics don't show it? maybe it's not as bad as you think it is?
A mic will tell you a lot

Re: Attila the Jav: We Tear Down Our AMC 360
Believe it or not you can get a pretty good idea of how worn it is by just feeling the wear....cylinder bore wear mostly happens at the top, if you can't feel a slight bit of "ridge" then it's probably worn less than 2 thousandths. If you can't feel any wear on the crank then it's probably worn less than 1 thousandth.
Wear is usually very noticeable....but it also takes expereience to know how much wear there is by how the parts look/feel

Re: Attila the Jav: We Tear Down Our AMC 360
The good news is that there isn't anything overtly fubar with the crank and there is minimal ridge at the tops of the bores. Hopefully it all checks out good.
There's another option that was planted in my ear. I can buy a 401 crank from Rock Auto for 2-300 bucks and it drops into this block and gives me a 385 (with stock bore).
That's appealing...

Re: Attila the Jav: We Tear Down Our AMC 360
you'd need 401 pistons though, right? to get the right pin height
this was supposed to be a quick rering job to get it running...not another money hole?

Re: Attila the Jav: We Tear Down Our AMC 360
Yeah it would require rods and pistons because the rod journals of the 401 crank are larger than the 360's and the pin height issue would be a problem.
Why does my imaginery bank account never run dry like the real one?
Thanks for the reality check Jim.

Re: Attila the Jav: We Tear Down Our AMC 360
The cheap re-ring jobs are great, if everything is in good enough shape. Should be able to get 20k+ miles out of it, probably more if there's very little bore taper
