    As I remember from my "Auto Information" classes in high school, the failure of Edsel was not the engineering or styling - it was the price point. Ford thought they had a gap between their Ford lineup and the Mercury lineup, and sought to fill that gap with the Edsel. The problem? Between the time the gap was identified, and the entire company spun up to speed - that gap no longer existed. Wages were increasing, and people who had enough money simply stepped up from Ford to Mercury.
    Consequently, the Edsel becoming synonymous with failure was the marketing failure....
