Re: Friday Excuse to Go Home Early and Drink: Toyota is the Most American Car Company; Camry More Do
The premise of the cars.com "index" is flawed on a number of levels. First, sales weighting the average for particular vehicles is highly deceptive. A 99% "American car" based on domestic content (which would be virtually impossible to mass produce at the present time) would be less "American" than a 75% domestic content model sold by a foreign "invader" in mass quantities. That's just stupid.
Secondly, the "domestic content" indexes are flawed because they typically do not account for the manufacturer's domestic and foreign "overhead" costs (e.g. engineering, design, management).
A better gauge of the "Americanness" of a manufacturer is the type of analysis done by the Level Field Institute. For example, comparing Ford to Toyota (http://www.levelfieldinstitute.org/f...d_v_Toyota.pdf) for the most recent year completed (2008) Ford directly employed approximately 65,000 Americans, while Toyota only employed 37,000. (Economists estimate that each OEM job supports nine jobs in the local community, including parts suppliers and other support jobs
85% of the vehicles Ford sold in America were built here in 2008. Only 46% of the vehicles Toyota sold in America were produced domestically.
Ford had ten U.S. assembly plants to Toyota's four.
Fords overall domestic content (e.g. the parts and materials that go into assembled vehicles)was 70%. Toyota's overall domestic content in 2008 was a paltry 41%
Ford employed 87 Americans for every 2,500 vehicles it sold in 2008. Toyota only employed 42 Americans per 2,500 vehicles sold.
The clear conclusion is that although Toyota may "grandstand" with a couple of popular models built in non-union "invader" assembly plants, the majority of the jobs created by Toyota's U.S. operations are still overseas. Thus it is "more American" is simply baseless propaganda.
SO QUIT DRINKING AND GET BACK TO WORK!
