Re: F1 Update: Massa in Stable Condition; Renault Team Suspended for One Race

Just read some interesting commentary by ex-F1 pilot Martin Brundle about this incident.

        Good stuff from Mr. Brundle.
I'll keep pulling for Massa, too.

Last night on German TV they were saying Michael Schumacher may take Massa?s seat for the rest of the year.

It's good that Massa is recovering.
But I think the knee-jerk reaction to suspend Renault after Alonso's lost wheel is pure bull-shit.
Was it human error or a failed component?
Anyway, one week earlier and there would have been no penalty. The FIA's harsh decision make it sound like Renault were caught trying to gain from the incident. Yeah, as if they wanted the wheel to part company!!

Re: F1 Update: Massa in Stable Condition; Renault Team Suspended for One Race

A Brawn launches a part that nearly killed Massa (and most likely has ended his career) and no suspension, but Renault muffs a tire change, no one gets hurt, but Renault is suspended.

              Logical?

On the other hand, the stewards claim that Renault knowingly released Alonso's car without the wheel nut retainer in place, and then didn't even tell him when he complained of tire trouble just before the wheel launched.

And the suspension was in the wake of the death of Henry Surtees, who was killed by a loose wheel while competing in a Formula Two event at Brands Hatch.

I also seem to remember somebody saying on the Fox/Speed broadcast that this was not the first time that Alonzo's Renault had a problem like this.

Any wonder why French cars aren't sold here anymore . . . .

I always enjoyed Brundle's commentary on F1. In Canada the local broadcaster would get the BBC feed, so we would have the excitable Murray Walker doing the broadcast, now replaced by James Allen, along with Martin Brundle providing the colour commentary from the perspective of a former driver.

Re: F1 Update: Massa in Stable Condition; Renault Team Suspended for One Race

The other issue with the Renault situation is that the tire retaining device on the car failed or was installed improperly causing it to fail. The tire, even if it became "disconnected" from the car should not have been able to bounce free.

No, it's not logical because one is a knee-jerk-reaction by the FIA.

And if Renault did release Alonso knowing about the wheel, that would change absolutely everything.
I would expect very servere penalties for Brawn if they knew their spring was about to fall off as well.

That would be so cool.. Love the Schumacher and it would be extrememly interesting to see what he can do in the not-so-competitive-of-late Ferrari.

The F1 telecast will have ratings explosion!
