Poignant. Sort of like when you spill battery acid on your favorite pair of pants . . . .

It must be the greens' version of "beating swords into plowshears" Or euthanizing a "gas guzzling V8" and recycling it into a half-dozen Priuses . . . .

"'We're excited about the type of jobs and driving the cars of tomorrow,' said Joe DiSanto, Brownstown Township's economic development manager, who used to thrill to the sound of big engines on the dragway."

READ: "I think whirring electric microcars are wimp-city, but we need jobs and they pay me a lot to say this kind of pap."

With apologies to Jan and Dean:

      VOLT CITY

      Whirr on that quarter mile!

Just charged up my golf car,
      now she really buzzes
A-lookin real tough like every hybrid does-zes
My 300-amp'er battery sure looks pretty
Gonna charge it up again and make it out to Volt City!

      Chorus

      I'm goin to Volt City
      (Nothin' to do now)
      Goin to Volt City
      (Racin' all through now)
      Goin to Volt City
      (Savin' my battery pack now)
      Goin to Volt City
      Whirr on that quarter mile!

The Infobabe's a-sayin on my favorite station
The Drag City races were the fastest in the nation
Wheels were the wildest and the stockers were pretty
Now "C4C" that Eight, go Reddy Kilo-Wait, and split to Volt City!

Round Detroit Dragway Willie Wiredhand fills the air
No teams tachin up and No action anywhere
No Checkered flags or wheelstands, it isn't pretty
Now there's nothing left but watts and amps out at Volt City.

      Chorus

      I'm stuck at Volt City
      (Nothin' to do now)
      Stuck at Volt City
      (Racin' all through now)
      Stuck at Volt City
      (Savin' my battery pack now)
      Stuck at Volt City
      Whirr on that quarter mile!

I'd need to check on the accuracy of that info. Makes for a good read though. Detroit Dragway has only been closed for a few years really - last runs were 1996. Not much time for a factory to be built and then go "dormant".

Last time I drove past the location it was the site of a large and functioning truck freight portal & warehouse - perhaps underutilised given the current economy - but again neither old nor dormant.

Accuracy concerns aside, it's the perfect analogy for our times.

Detroit Dragway was on Sibley at Dix.

An aerial view of the site provides no real clues of its storied history. http://maps.yahoo.com/#mvt=s&lat=42....239665&zoom=17
