My guess for a truck like this that it was switched from carrying fuel to carrying water to supply the fire fighting trucks in rural areas where hydrants are readily available.

My guess for power would be a 6v53 seeing that there are two chimneys sticking up behind the storage box, and they look small in size, 3" maybe. Next time stick your head in the front fenderwell before you beat a hasty retreat you coward.

pretty common way to get to the engine back then?

Big trucks kept the old sheetmetal in use for a long time after the pickups were modernized...neat that a 50s cab was used in the late 60s! I think Ford and GMC did the same thing with their cabovers.

My favorite OTR Dodge, the Big Horn. No leanin' over a fender on these big boys.

Jim, that's killer! Neat to know it was common practice to have the trucks set up like that.

Jeremy, that big horn is bad ass!

Lots of those large scale Dodge/Fargo trucks still in use by Farmers as Grain trucks around here. Fact is, they are seasonal vehicles and only saw a few miles a year around harvest. (Until the country elevators dried up and Farmers were forced to haul their grain an hour or more to giant corporate terminals.)

Those Big Horns are rare(only 200-ish ever made).....fact of the matter is that the Dodge commercial offerings just never sold well(I believe they were only made in 1975).

The general layout of the cabs on the LCF's and the Big Horn sucked out loud...I've been in a couple, just moving them around...why bother with a Dodge when a KW/Pete or a White-Freightliner(as it was back then) was more driver-friendly, and had a better resale value?

Most of the Dodge diesels had Detroits in them....rather ironic, considering Detroit was a division of GM at that time.

Cool find, though....I'd say one of the few left that didn't rust to death.

I was looking at Travco motorhome stuff, and came across this, it has the vin decoder for some Dodge trucks

they list a lot of diesel engine options!
