Big haul mining dump trucks have used electric wheel motors for years so, the tech was there, just never applied to a dozer I would guess. This is were Cat's focus is now that they are not making OTR truck engines. I'm sure this is just the tip of the ice berg from them.

I will say I wonder how well the electric motors will hold up.......

the High-sprocket track layout made for an easy access setup...just walk up the tracks(ran a few dpzers in addition to hauling hevy equipment).

I wonder if they'll offer this setup on their Challenger tractors(now, THOSE are fun machines to operate!).

D7? I think the smallest dozer at my mine is a D8, and most are D10's. They probably needed the space where the normal transmission goes for the big ass alternator/generator, so the motor's had to go under it.
        Escaped on a technicality.

I can attest to the use of electric motors and drive systems for many years now. Caterpillar is and has been doing this for a while now, but are going into it for the extra power they have for less weight, and more torque and just general less maintenance. I work for a Rock Crusher manufacturer that is from Germany. All of our Mobile tracked Cushers are electric machines, using the diesel engine to power a generator that supplies power to the drive motors. Trains have been run this same way for many years also. They can get alot more power with alot less fuel bieng used to get it.

The Engines will still be coming around again, they are just trying to wait around to see what the outcome is going to be for 2010 and what this Tier 4 is giong to do to these currently slated tier 4 engines. They are in close with International, and hasn't anyone noticed all these International delivery trucks around with the Electric drive motor systems, regenerative braking systems, hell, all kinds of things out there.

We're a dyin' breed fellas, Everything's gettin' high tech and this fellas' gettin' old.
