Re: Hurst to Auction Special Edition Camaro at SEMA
Anybody suffering from "special edition" fatigue yet?
"Special Editions" are about like talk shows and blogs: nearly everybody has one.
When is "Bangshift" going to offer a "Special Edition" of something (lots of add-on doo-dads, badges and added dealer mark-up).
It could be worse . . . See http://www.stangnet.com/mustang-foru...ack-widow.html

Originally posted by Brian LohnesDear god, the "Black Widow" is a hot mess.
But as messy as this?
At least "the Prudhomme Edition" packs enough suds to make a quick exit out of a guffawing crowd.
The poor SoCo "Widow" reportedly languishes with the pedestrian STOCK 4.6! And it'll get squashed like a bug by the . . . A. J. Foyt Mustang (http://www.moddedmustangs.com/aj-foy...n-mustang.html . . .
Or maybe not! A.J. 's supercharger is optional.
But don't you just love it when a celebrity (usually one fading into history) with seemingly no tie to pony cars whatsoever licenses his name for another "body kit/tape stripe" special?
The most entertaining "special edition" story has probably been the twisted saga of various "Eleanor" clones. (see http://speedzzter.blogspot.com/2008/...r-what-is.html)
"What is a 'checkbook gearhead' with an undying passion for a clone of the 1967 'Eleanor' (R) Mustang (R) from the 2000 remake of 'Gone in Sixty Seconds'(R) and a spare $140,000.00 burning a hole in the pocket of his (or her) designer jeans to do?"
They could buy an "official Shelby" clone from Unique Performance (at least until Unique "collapsed into a Texas-sized heap of despair and recriminations.") Or that big check could buy an "official Eleanor" ( A Denise Halicki-licensed, don't-call-it-a-Shelby-GT500 Eleanor) from an unheralded builder in . . . Oklahoma?
Or they could throw caution to the wind and score one of the "bootleg" Eleanors.
What about forgetting the whole "special edition" thing and "rolling your own" supercar? Who would pay big money for that someday at Barrett-Jackson?

Likewise, when scale models are advertised as collectibles, they cease to be collectible.
And I've certainly enjoyed seeing those occasional "collector edition" magazine covers (usually with a prominent "Recycle this magazine" PSA somewhere inside) . . . . ;D
(Of course I still have every HRM, PHR, CC, and Turbo [R.I.P.] published since 1980 (and a spotty collection of earlier ones) . . . including the one with the legendary story on the hose-clamped tranny mount-equipped "Cheap Thrills" Dart . . . . So collecting something apparently isn't necessarily based on collectibility)

I take it all back NOW THAT THERE'S A "SPECIAL EDITION" HURST MUSTANG! http://www.autoblog.com/gallery/2010...ce-car-photos/
(Okay, not really. There's still too many "special editions" out there.
How about a "Top 11" list of "special editions" we'd like to see (in jest, of course)?)
