Moderately interesting, but other than offering everything in one easy to order package, how's it different from being able to order the parts piecemeal from the service counter?

I'd have been a bit more interested in the idea suggested earlier of an LSx with Gen 1 motor mounts.

I don't think you've dealt with rigorous smog laws?

The package is very important to the government, so that they know that it's emission compliant. If you bought it piecemeal I know that you would for a fact leave off buying the MAF sensor. And most would leave off buying the catalytic converters. Leaving those off void their emission compliancy.

This is similar to getting a CARB certificate/E.O.# for a supercharger to be a smog legal addition to the engine. Only this is the first case I know of where an entire engine package is an emission compliant swap.
      Escaped on a technicality.

I'd like to hear DanStokes thoughts on this. I think it's a huge deal to be a legal swap.

I'm with Matt. While cool and all, it is really only aimed at a small target market that want/have to meet emissions standards for new vehicle installs. This step in crate-motorism is just the next move in trying to get us out from under the hoods of our hot rods.

            So...

Yea! for continuing to make performance parts
Boo! for making something 99% of us will never need to use.

Not if you drive a late model in California...

I thought that it didnt matter for a car 75 and older in CA for emissions? Can this motor be put into say a 85 Monte Carlo and be legal? is that what I understand? Why use a 55 Chevy as a demonstration if thats the case?

It's a great idea and nice package for those in Cali, but I think the cost is going to kill it.
Outside of a few C3 vettes, I can't think of one '76 to '95 GM vehicle that I would drop a $10k drivetrain into.
I mean, if you had $10k, wouldn't you use some of that cash to replace your current ride with a pre'76 smog exempt one?

I was thinking the same thing but if you think about it you buy a 2,000 dollar g or f or b body and this motor and its still cheaper than a new car. I wouldnt do it just because id never drive it in the salt and snow but it would be ok in a drier climate.

So, I can get a '77 Trans Am like the one in Smokey and the Bandit, install the smog legal LS3 motor, and not worry about emissions checks? Cool. ;D

The price is a little too rich for my blood, but being able to swap an LS into ANY pre OBD-II vehicle opens up a lot of options. If I read this right I could toss the 4 cyl or V6 from an '80s or '90s vehicle and put in one of these packages, legally be able to register the car, and never run the risk of being fined for emissions violations. Trust me, MD will fine the heck out of you for emissions violations.

The more I think about this, the more I think is it a play to appease 'somebody' in the upper levels of mgmt. It may be a play to show them they are trying to be green while producing performance parts. Probably the game they have to play given the state of their parent company.

I wonder if these transplanted vehicles will suddenly be subject to emissions testing even if they were previously exempt?

I agree, and I also wonder - do they know something we don't? How expensive is it to get EPA certification for their engine packages, compared with the money they'll get back with sales? In other words, does such a move make monetary sense unless they have a good idea of what the market is and will be? If new emissions legislation cut the crate engine market at the knees, GM would be the last ones standing and would make a killing.

Unless they're just being directed to do this by their "owners".

Now I sound like a conspiracy theorist. ;)
