Well, one difference, the cars back then had full frames and big V8 engines already. The Mopars were uni-body soon after, but with the roll cage they were strong enough for racing. Who wants to see a "stock" new Ford Taurus or Impala racing with their "stock" engines? Not me.

    Correction, it was 1960.
I strongly suspect that you could pack the grandstands for a "show" involving production-based, street legal Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers racing on ovals.

And actually, racing stock Impalas and Tauruses would produce a lot more drama than the COT. At least we could tell the difference between brands again. My money would be on the SHO . . . . (unless Chrysler showed up with an SRT-8). Who knows if any of them would make 500 miles . . . It'd be as big a drama as the first Southern 500!

Actually, Darlington is one of the few race tracks left that can produce interesting racing in the homogenized NASCAR COT . . . notwithstanding that about 98% of the drivers are some of the most uninteresting automatons on the face of the Earth.

Yup. Too bad that "Think With Your Dipstick Guy" (Not Tiger Woods, BTW) didn't come out to liven the thing up a tad.

Of course if he did, today's typical namby-pamby NASCAR celebrity driver wouldn't have decked the guy . . . but instead would have launched into another memorized listing of sponsors . . . .

"Well the ARMANI TUXEDO really absorbed the sting of that dipstick today at The WYNN LAS VEGAS HOTEL AND CASINO. And I've got to hand it to the LOWE'S CHEVROLET crew who got me dressed up and dialed in for tonight's NASCAR SPRINT CUP Banquet on SPEED. Those HAINES ALL-COTTON BRIEFS were really workin' too."

"And PRADA really gave me a good set of shoes for tonight's NASCAR SPRINT CUP Banquet on SPEED. . . . I was able to manuver around and put my LOWE'S CHEVROLET keaster exactly where I wanted it on stage tonight." It really helped me collect my fourth consecutive NASCAR SPRINT CUP championship trophy for HENDRICK MOTORSPORTS, LOWE'S, QUAKER STATE, KOBALT TOOLS, THE NATIONAL GUARDand CHEVROLET."

"And Chad Knaus really made all the right calls to get me away from that crazy dipstick guy and get me back to the head table here at The WYNN LAS VEGAS HOTEL AND CASINO."

"And I'm sure that after a couple of cans of MONSTER ENERGY drink, some GOODY'S COOL ORANGE POWDERS, and another NASCAR drug test, we'll be ready just cash that $6.6 Million SPRINT CUP check and keep on diggin' for Number 5 . . . Could somebody get my man -- the 2009 Bill France Award of Excellence winner Rick Hendrick -- a KLEENIX and some VISINE eye drops?"

It's got nothing to do with eras. It's about blindly accepting a sub-standard product like sheeple, or being a little more discerning and saying/doing something about it. Demanding a better quality product from NASCAR. (Or NHRA or anyone else for that matter.)

Maybe if more people had vocalised their displeasure with the quality of Detroit's offerings, domestic automakers wouldn't be in the mess they are in right now. Instead, other, hungry manufacturers brought forward arguably better products at lower prices, offering disgruntled consumers an alternative. Now - as the Domestics have scrambled to bring their stuff up to the level of the interlopers, they are finding it may be too late...

And again - "most" agree? Who makes up this "most?" Racing fans? Or general-public television watchers who will will move on to the next shiny, slickly marketed thing that flashes across their TV screens? I think it's the latter.

Sure - and the "masses" dig the hell out of going to Wal*Mart & buying up all the cheap ass shit they can fit into their shopping carts. So much so that virtually every other retailer has adopted the same policy of selling only cheaply made schlock, dreck and drivel.

So y'know what? When people bitch back at the schlock being force fed to us by the producers of NASCAR entertainment, I see the bitching as a positive thing. Maybe, just maybe there's some hope that a few people are starting to think for themselves again and they aren't just blindly accepting what someone else tells them they are supposed to accept, like some kind of sheep.

If we just sit back without saying anything and quietly accept shit in everything we consume, then those who produce it will continue to feel justified in providing us nothing but shit.

Oh I'm not defending NASCAR, just get so damn sick of the constant negativity on the board.

Then leave and DON'T come back.

All I know is people seem to think it's "trendy" to bash stock car racing these days.

Maybe it's now a trend because it has gotten boring and the people are noticing. I used to never miss a race on t.v. and would always go to a couple per year, but after Earnhardt, the Chase and cookie cutter cars... Bleh.

    And?

What did you want them to do, start yelling and swearing? They have big sponsors, these guys have talent behind the steering wheel, they aren't stand-up comics.

If NASCAR sucks so bad, what other motorsports in America is so much better? Do you like monster trucks better or ? ? ?
