Re: Mustang Outsells Camaro for 2009
The way I read it, it was calendar year sales for each nameplate.
Thus the Camaro people have valid points about how the OZ Bumblebee Camaro wasn't on sale the entire year, and lost some sales to slow deliveries, waiting lists, rampant dealer greed, sub-optimal equipment mixes (mostly, not enough V6s), the whole bailout/bankruptcy fiasco, and other demand-reducting factors.
On the other hand, considering how far down Mustang was on power in 2009 across the model range and the obvious pent-up demand for both Camaros and Challengers (both of which have virtually no competition from used versions of these cars at this point), Mustang's calendar year win is mildly surprising.
Glancing at the sales charts, both Challenger and Camaro cannibalized sales from Mustang. And Mustang's failure to break the 70,000 units mark places calendar year 2009 as one of the worst sales years in Mustang's history.
For MY 2011, Ford's power-to-weight, heritage, and quality advantages . . . and perhaps some modest recovery in the auto market, should bump up Mustang's sales quite a bit. Camaro and Challenger are probably still a year or two away from "cooling off" (fashion cycles in sporty coupes tend to run 3-4 years) or losing sales to used cars. So calendar year 2010 should be very interesting.

Still, opinions aside, a good news story all-round to see performance continues to be a money-maker, the pony-car wars persist and at least two of the three (Camaro and Mustang) are making their manufacturers $$$.
And lots of excitement about the new 5.0...rumours of over 400 hp and possibly even revival of a Boss 302 limited edition? Blue oval fans should be salivatingMichael from Hampton Roads

Oh really? Let's look at some objective test data.
"The 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt SS [260 h.p. turbo/direct injected 2.0 liter Ecotec] uses up just 5.8 seconds accelerating to 60 mph, and it goes through the quarter-mile in 14 seconds flat at 103.6 mph."
Compare the Cobalt SS to the 2010 Mustang GT:"A 13.5-second quarter-mile sprint at 102.7 mph proves otherwise, neatly splitting the difference between the Chevy [Camaro SS] and the Dodge [5.7 Hemi Challenger R/T=] . Zero to 60 in 5.2 seconds (4.9 seconds with 1 foot of rollout like on a drag strip) is nothing to sneeze at either."
There is no question that the SS Camaro was a few tenths quicker in stock form than a 2010 Mustang GT (and slower than Shelby GT500 & GT500KR (the real "King of the Road" in the four-seat American sports coupe class)).
The turbo Cobalt SS is a hot pocket rocket (it will make my Top 11 Collector GM cars of the '00s list when I get around to typing it) . But you'd have to knock back a couple of forties to delude yourself into thinking that new 315 h.p. Mustang GTs are getting "blown away" by Cobalt SS on anything like a regular basis.

Here's some food for thought: if GM would have only added a second bank of cylinders to the Ecotec 2.0, the resulting twin-turbo 4 liter DOHC V8 would pound out more power than an LS7. If rumors are true, the next generation of Shelby GT500 is going to give the LS gang a real education on turbo DOHC V8 power . . . . ;D
