Neat rig, wonder if it has the twin stick 18 speed? Have only seen one other of those big 6's rigs for sale. Not sure how rare they are, seems like they made more than 5 of them. Gotta watch those trucker stories. Stories is the key word. -

Thats an article written by Bruce Mallinson. He's the Keith Black of diesel engines. If more of these were around, he'd know about it. There are certainly more single turbo KTA's around. Still 1150 cubes, but factory rated at a paltry 450 to 600 HP.
The KW is a two stick, 6x4.Comment

Bruce's shop is located just a few miles from my house. My dad bought a custom high-flow muffler system from him for his old 2000 Kenworth W900L. Cool guy and really know his way around a diesel engine.Still plays with trucks....Comment

When I worked for Cale Yarborough we had a KW900 with a KTA 600 pulling the Cup trailer - what a torque monster. When the truck driver quit, guess who was the only guy there who had a CDL? Drove that thing for half a season. Had a 13 speed (top gear was o/d) and rarely had to downshift at a gross weight of 82-83,000# goin' to/from the racetracks. Jr Johnson also had a pair of KW900/KTA 600s. Those three tractors were the pulling champs of Winston Cup in '94. vicvic NASCARlandComment

sorry to burst some bubbles.
there is no such thing as 1000hp 6 cyl diesel...and if there was, it is nossed going for a 500 foot run in a hillbilly truck pull...and barely making it....if it does at all...
no reason to upset real truckers who need the power as advertised.
A v12 setup stable could get close to that, and they would have to back off for ujoints, rear ends and c-rails to be over the road and normal. It is still limited at 1500 foot pounds with a damn good driver....

And that 1000+ HP is at the wheels. Once upon a time they had dynos at truck shows. CAT sponsored them, because the 3408 was king of the hill. After the Cummins started taking over, the dyno contest went away. But they regularly put over 1000 at the wheels. At 1150 cubes, about 1 horse per cubic inch doesn't seem unusual.Comment
