Ford NEEDS to put something together that just makes people say WOW! That is just what Chevy did with the Camaro. People really like things that are new or reborn sort of speak. Ford hasn't been able to do this since the GT.
Look at the responce the PT Cruiser got when it hit the market.

even though the camaro is new, it still didn't outsell the mustang. every non camaro/non mustang mag i read puts the mustang better in most catagories, the big exception being power. next year with the 412hp 5 liter coming out, that problem will be solved. once the newness of the camaro wears off, it will see it's sales decline, just like the challenger.

Hate to see this. As if things were not bad enough.

I think they drug their feet a little too long on whatever is going to be new about the Mustang.

When the "New" body style came out last year or whatever, the joke between my friend and I was that it was like the old song by The Who. "Meet the new Boss, same as the old Boss...

The new engine will help. The faithful will flock to it, and if they can keep the price point comparable to the low/mid 30k range of the SS, then the general public will buy in too.

They are going to have to make a HELL of an effort to create something like what they had in the 80's and 90's with the whole Motorsport/SVT dealer-factory support apparatus for the performance aftermarket. The whole LS phenomenon has taken off. GMPP has performance parts for days, and the aftermarket is fully on board.

I really want to see Ford catch up on this. The competition is good for both of them, and for enthusiasts in general.

As for Mopar... wow. Totally lost in the wilderness.

                  1. 2010 was a wasted sales season because Mustang was so far down in power to Camaro and Challenger (excluding, of course the alpha-dog Shelby GT500).

                  2. Ford waited YEARS too long to put a hot DOHC in the Mustang GT.

                  3. The price points are getting beyond the range of what blue collar buyers and the kids can afford (Mustang V6 is almost as much as an SVT Cobra was back in the 1990s . . . and it will only get worse as the 35.5 m.p.g. CAFE law forces more tech and reduced numbers of V8s)

                  4. The bad economy is reducing the number of three car families, putting pressure on sales of sporty cars. http://www.cnbc.com/id/29031750

                  5. The Coyote does start behind the backward LeSs V8 in aftermarket support.

(As anyone who has read Zora Arkus-Duntov's legendary memo (http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...ov_letter.html) can tell you, it's the fault of the OEM factories when any engine is under-developed for performance use.

When the factories lead in performance development, the aftermarket generally follows.

The real reason that the SBC is the belly-button common engine in high performance is because Vince Piggins and Zora got the ball rolling (and kept it rolling) with OEM and service counter racing parts. Sure, Ed Cole's design was light, cheap, and built in huge quantities. And the most common RP0s left a lot on the table for rodders to unleash. But without the factory leading the way, development would have been a lot slower.

The LeSs V8 has just slotted in where the old SBC left off.

Zora correctly opined in 1953 that hot rodders are conservative and will keep doing the same things over and over unless the factories shoulder the development work. (BTW, here's an interesting 2005 "update" of Zora's famous memo: http://forums.carcraft.com/70/678626...ors/index.html))
                  6. Ford wasted Mustang's period of exclusivity. http://speedzzter.blogspot.com/2006/...-mustangs.html
