Re: Carnage Video: Watch the Rear Axle Get Ripped Clean Out of a Pulling Truck!
A few years ago at a pull in Georgetown, KY Alan Gaines was running his blown 4wd chevy (you did know there were three trucks of his called OBS and one the Midnight Express...the C-cab twin-engine). The video I have isn't that good. All you can see is the sled stopping and the roof of the orange truck shooting forward and dirt flying everywhere.
As usual....there were a bunch of people standing past the fences at the end of the track so Alan, being the experienced professional he is, steered the truck into a steel-wheeled roller to stop and avoid killing someone. It ripped the diff out clean and the impact with the roller pretty well mucked up the front of the truck. By the next season he had it all right again. I've been going to pulls for over 30 years now and it's the first time I'd witnessed something like this in person. I'd like to avoid that in the future. I was sure someone was going to get creamed. Alan must have been shook up some too as he later was on the PA asking folks to please stop standing past the fences. Hmmmm.....I thought that was the promoter's responsibility....

And that's why my hitch is not welded straight to my rear axle... (not allowed in my class anyway).
Cool video Brian, thanks for posting. Nice truck, even if it is only front-wheel drive now... Can't wait for pulling season to start...Still plays with trucks....

Not necessarily. This truck appears to be a "hot street" setup, which doesn't always require kill switches. That's why all of the tracks around here prohibit anyone from standing at the end of the track, and sometimes will pile a large pile of dirt at the end to catch runaway trucks or tractors.Still plays with trucks....

The kill switch simply kills power/fuel....it doesn't activate some kind of drivetrain brake or lock. Lots of interita wound up in that stuff and at full scream the wheels are moving at a high-rate of speed. Even with power cut - the load is off once the sled is loose so the front half is free to go where it wants. If the front wheels are turned a little one way or the other you can bet that thing will make a bee-line for whatever is in that direction. I wouldn't want to do it...

Am I tu understand the sled was attached to a hitch that was attached to the read diff of this truck...is this normal?...I can not see that ending well...To me that would be the weakest link....If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
