There were the factory altered wheelbase cars and cars that had their wheelbase altered by individual racers. The "Jayhawker" is one of the latter, which makes it much less valuable than any of the surviving factory cars. Not to take anything away from original owner/builder Jon Thorne, who won a lot races in the car, as documneted in the ebay photos.

That really should matter only to people who collect cars as investments and to collector car insurance underwriters. The only really valid test for "value" of a unique vehicle is what a willing buyer will pay to a willing seller in an arms-length transaction. (And certainly perceptions about the "factory versus post-title modification" issue may play a part in what some potential buyers are willing to pay) A lesser measure would be "reproduction/replacement cost."** Anything else is little more than speculation and hot air.

In short, if someone buys that car based on its perceived or anticipated"value" instead of its "cool factor" and historic provenance, they're buying it for the wrong reason.


**Soulless pirates and corporate raider types would also point to "break-up value" as a valid indicator, but I'd rather not contemplate someone buying this time capsule car for disassembly. Besides, its assembled value is probably much greater than the sum of its parts.

I know why he's selling it. Having a race car name Jayhawker anywhere within the borders of Nebraska is asking for big trouble. He needs to unload it quick before the Cornhuskers come and get him.
