Re: NHRA Four-Wide Nationals to Continue in 2011
Way too much back-pedaling and whitewashing this weekend, don't you think?
Here's my take on 4 wide drags:
To Tom Compton and the NHRA staff - once again you followed what you thought was the money trail, but the sponsors will end up having the last word. Bet on it!
To the racers - should have kept the steel in your spines instead of backing down! You'll be sorry you didn't!
To O. Bruton Smith - nice try, but no cigar! It ain't drag racing, so stop your whining. Aren't you making enough money already?
Act your age, not your shoe size. - Prince

Re: NHRA Four-Wide Nationals to Continue in 2011
What I thought was a bit goofy were the runs where the fastest two cars advanced. If they want to stick with something that resembles normal drag racing, only the fastest ofthe four should advance. But then the event will be over in fewer rounds, so I guess they didn't want that. It will be interesting to see what the unspecified changes to the format are.

Re: NHRA Four-Wide Nationals to Continue in 2011
Dan, the drivers' boycott ain't gonna happen.
Those guys are working under contract and if they refuse to go, their car owner will have 30 people who have no ride melting their cell phones down for a shot.
Car owners have contracts with their sponsors, they're bound to be there or they'll torque off the people funding their operation.
The reason Garlits was able to hold the successful (with respect to attendance...the actual races were frought with issues) challenges to Indy in the early 1970's is because racers got to make the decision where they raced because they PAID THEIR OWN WAY. No one to answer to but themselves (aside from a few notable exceptions).
That ship left the harbor decades ago.

I know that they wont boycott. I would just like to see that happen. Tired of getting things forced on me when the majority don't want it.1964 Chevelle

Re: NHRA Four-Wide Nationals to Continue in 2011
Sorry I got kinda Kruschev there. :D
Once Bruton spent the 63 million to build the place, the die was cast, in my opinion anyway.
The real tale of the tape is going to be whether or not he puts the addition two lanes in at Vegas that he planned for all along. It seems that the agreement struck with PRO is that he won't be doing that, as this race is going to be the only 4-wide one on the tour...for now. That which you manifest is before you.
